The Brett Whiteley Studio was the workplace and home of Australian artist, Brett Whiteley (1939–92).
The artist bought the former warehouse in 1985 and converted it into a studio and exhibition space. He lived there from 1987 to 1992, the year he died in Thirroul.
The visitor is offered the unique opportunity to experience the atmosphere of the space – the studio with his unfinished paintings, art equipment and collections of reference books, and the graffiti wall covered with quotes and images.
The living area has memorabilia such as photographs, objects, postcards, furniture, his music collection and sketchbooks. The gallery has changing exhibitions of the artist’s works: paintings, drawings, sculpture and graphics from the Brett Whiteley Studio, Art Gallery of New South Wales and private collections.
White Rabbit Gallery
The White Rabbit Gallery was opened in 2009 to showcase what has become one of the world’s most significant collections of Chinese contemporary art.
Dedicated to works made in the 21st century, the White Rabbit Collection is owned by Judith Neilson, who was inspired to establish it after her first trips to Beijing in the late 1990s. She was thrilled by the creative energy and technical quality of the works she saw and wanted to share them with people outside China.
Carriageworks
Carriageworks is one of Australia’s most renowned and significant contemporary multi-arts organisations.
We support artists and producers to develop and present major new works in performance, visual arts and related artforms. Reflecting the diverse communities of urban Sydney, our artist-led program is ambitious, radical and always inclusive.
The Museum of Contemporary Art Australia
Welcome to the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA), Australia’s leading museum dedicated to exhibiting, collecting and interpreting the work of today’s artists.
We celebrate the work of living artists, bringing exceptional exhibitions of international and Australian art to as many people as possible – welcoming over a million visitors each year – in the belief that art is for everyone.
Our vision is to make contemporary art and ideas widely accessible to a range of audiences through the presentation of a diverse program of exhibitions and special events, both onsite and offsite. From major thematic exhibitions and solo surveys of established artists, to new work by emerging artists, touring exhibitions and community-led projects through C3West, we strive to cover the range and diversity of contemporary art.
Located on one of the world’s most spectacular sites on the edge of Sydney Harbour, the MCA stands on a land of immense cultural and historical significance to the traditional owners of this place, the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation. The wonderful artwork Warrang by Brook Andrew, situated at the entrance of the Museum on Circular Quay, helps to inform visitors of the relevance of our site.
The MCA Collection contains over 4000 works by Australian artists that have been acquired since 1989, with a strong commitment to works by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists. The Museum collects across all art forms with holdings in painting, photography, sculpture, works on paper and moving image.
Admission to our galleries, cafe and temporary exhibitions is free (admission fees apply to our major summer exhibition, the Sydney International Art Series).
